One of the two ancient races, dwarves are a northern species, mostly known for living in and under the icy mountains of the northern tundras. Their kingdoms have existed since time immemorial, and are fairly isolated. Humans have a few trade outposts on the southern shores, bartering goods from the rest of the world to the dwarves, but even the Worldly Empire has not so much as asked the dwarves for alliance.
Some dwarves, however, live on many of the more northern continents and island, and it is said that their tunnels reach under the ocean to the northern tundra. Dwarven histories agree with the legends of the Goliaths that when the world was a younger place there were no oceans. As such, the dwarven undersea tunnels are said by them to just be the tunnel-works of older dwarven kingdoms. This is somewhat substantiated by the fact that entrances to abandoned or flooded dwarven tunnelworks exist throughout the known world.
Dwarves are stubborn and isolationist, and often frustrated by the younger races. They resent the rise of the Divine Empire, and believe that the gods flooded their world in preparation for the Divine Empire. They also understand that of the elder races, their kingdoms were those least affected by the flood. Now that the Divine Empire has fallen (an event that many still remember from their childhoods). Most other dwarven lore is largely unknown.
Dwarves aren't very well known, but everyone knows that they are secretive, brusque, apathic, old, and stubborn.
For Dwarf PCs:
Stats can be found in the PHB, and are as listed, save that Dwarves don't need to drink water. Note that your history checks will be operating off of a difference set of history than everyone else, since Dwarves stayed fairly separate from the rest of the world, but have been there a fair bit longer.
If you Play a dwarven PC, you're probably going to be different than all the stereotypes above - I mean, you aren't spending your life in the tunnels like a normal dwarf for... some reason.
